SPECIALISED PHYSIOTHERAPY CARE FOR LYMPHOEDEMA MANAGEMENT

EFFECTIVE TREATMENT & MANAGEMENT FOR LYMPHOEDEMA

At Sturt Road Physio in Brighton, SA, we provide specialised treatment for lymphoedema, a chronic condition that causes swelling due to impaired lymphatic function. Serving patients across Brighton, Marion, and Glenelg, our team of expert physiotherapists is dedicated to offering compassionate, comprehensive care to help manage lymphoedema and improve your quality of life.

Lymphoedema often arises when the lymphatic system is unable to efficiently drain fluid, leading to swelling in the affected area. This condition can occur in one or more limbs or other parts of the body and may develop following surgery, radiation therapy, or as a result of genetic factors. Whether you are dealing with primary lymphoedema or secondary lymphoedema, our team can create an individualised treatment plan to address your needs.

WHAT IS  LYMPHOEDEMA?

Lymphoedema is a condition that occurs when the lymphatic system, which helps transport lymph fluid throughout the body, becomes damaged or blocked. When this happens, fluid builds up in the tissues, causing chronic swelling and discomfort.

There are two main types of lymphoedema:

Primary Lymphoedema

This is a rare, genetic form of lymphoedema that occurs at birth or develops later in life. It’s typically caused by abnormalities in the lymphatic system.

Secondary Lymphoedema

This is the most common form, often resulting from damage to the lymphatic system due to surgery, trauma, cancer treatments (such as radiation therapy), or infections.

In both types of lymphoedema, swelling is typically persistent and can affect daily activities. If left untreated, lymphoedema can lead to recurrent infections, reduced mobility, and complications that significantly affect quality of life.

TREATMENT FOR LYMPHOEDEMA AT STURT ROAD PHYSIO

At Sturt Road Physio, we take a multidisciplinary approach to the management of lymphoedema. Our treatments aim to reduce swelling, improve lymphatic drainage, and enhance mobility, helping you regain normal function and manage your condition effectively.

Our treatments include:

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

This gentle, hands-on technique helps encourage the flow of lymph fluid and reduces the buildup of swelling. MLD can be highly effective in relieving the discomfort associated with lymphoedema and promoting better circulation.

Compression Therapy

Compression garments, such as sleeves, stockings, or bandages, help prevent fluid buildup and support the body’s ability to maintain normal lymphatic function. Compression is often a critical part of long-term management for lymphoedema.

Intermittent Pneumatic Compression (IPC)

Using a pneumatic pump, this treatment helps move fluid out of the swollen area, especially in more severe cases of lymphoedema. The process involves applying controlled pressure to the affected area, which mimics the natural pumping action of the lymphatic system.

Exercise & Movement Therapy

Exercise is a key part of managing lymphoedema, as it improves circulation, muscle strength, and lymphatic flow. Our physiotherapists will guide you through appropriate exercises that suit your condition and help reduce swelling.

Kinesiotaping

This technique involves the application of an elastic therapeutic tape to the affected area to improve lymphatic drainage and reduce swelling. Kinesiotaping also helps support the muscles and tissues surrounding the affected area.

Skin Care & Education

Proper skin care is essential in preventing infection and improving skin integrity. We educate patients on how to protect their skin from irritation and help them establish daily routines for better care of the affected areas.
